Ballesteros discharged from hospital, goes home

Good news out of Madrid.  Seve Ballesteros has been released from Madrid's La Paz Hospital more than two months after brain surgery to remove a malignant tumor.  Ballesteros said on his Web site:

Thanks to them I will be able to play the mulligan of my life, which I expect to enjoy at my best.  There is a long recovery time ahead and I shall keep fighting with patience and determination against the brain tumor that was detected at the beginning of October.

According to an ESPN report, Seve Ballesteros' condition is improving.  The La Paz Hospital said his condition has been "evolving favorably."  He will remain in the Intensive Care Unit. 

Ballesteros to undergo follow-up operation

I heard this on PRI's The World earlier this evening and read the latest report from the Associated Press which said:

Seve Ballesteros’ brain tumor is cancerous and he will undergo another operation to relieve pressure caused by swelling and bleeding that have recently developed.

The remaining parts of the malignant tumor, located in a very deep part of the brain, will be removed in Friday’s procedure.

La Paz Hospital said Thursday that the surgery is ‘of great complexity.’

Ballesteros calls it quits

Seve Ballesteros announced earlier today at a news conference that he is going to retire from competitive golf.  Steve Sands of The Golf Channel said on Golf Central, "One of the greatest players in the history of the game, who played his first Open Championship in 1975 here at Carnoustie, informed the world that he was struggling with an internal fight.  Seve Ballesteros’ heart said keep playing, his head said retire.  On Monday, Seve announced his head won the battle and with that, the 5-time major champion’s brilliant career, was officially over."  Ballesteros, who turned 50 in April, won a record 50 times on the European Tour along with five major championships.
