Goydos: "He's just a regular guy"

US Open qualifying- Paul Goydos At the end of each day, I like to look at The Golf Watch's incoming web traffic.  Like most web editors, I scan the referral addresses to my site and view the most read pages.  Tonight, before I scoured the web, I noticed that I had received a number of hits on old Paul Goydos posts.  I knew something was up.

Soon after, I learned that Goydos' former wife died, meaning the affable Tour vet will be taking a leave of absence.

I can't sum it up any better than this graf from Jason Sobel of ESPN.com:

As if his personality weren't enough to attract fans, perhaps the reasoning behind his leave of absence will only make hearts grow fonder while he remains away from the Tour. How many single fathers would -- if it were fiscally feasible -- leave their job to care for their children? Well, most of 'em, I would think, and so it only goes to prove what we've known about Goydos for years: He's just a regular guy.

Goydos: Tiger is underrated

Paul_goydosPaul Goydos appeared on the Jim Rome Show yesterday, and addressed the comment that an anonymous PGA Tour golfer made last week on golf.com about the "Tiger-obsessed media":

I think Tiger Woods is an underrated player.  I don’t think people have any idea how good he is.  I don’t think the media has any idea how good he is.  He is going to win 125 tournaments, he is probably going to win 25 majors.  What he is doing to golf is lunacy, it’s indescribable.  He’s the most famous athlete maybe on the planet.  What he’s accomplished in the last 11 years is insane.

_

Paul, I think The Golf Channel knows how good he is, but the point is well taken.  Words don't do Woods' prowess justice.

On a sidenote, it looks like Goydos is working out a hat endorsement deal, as he referenced on TGC that his agent has been on the phone all week talking to prospective endorsers.  He will be selling that Long Beach State hat, originally purchased for $26 at the airport, for charity this weekend.

Goydos' strong play will pay off, expect new hat

Paul_goydos_with_putter_on_chinPaul Goydos won over a lot of fans this week at the Players with his caring personality and carefree attitude.  I'm guessing he also won over a few sponsors.  Goydos wore a Long Beach State hat this week which he recently bought at an airport.  I'm sure a hat endorsement deal will be coming real soon.

Goydos will earn $1,026,000 for his second place finish.

Goydos' performance at Players is unexpected

Goydos_paul03disBefore this week, Paul Goydos had never finished inside the top-10 in a major championship or the Players.  Now, Goydos has the third round lead and a one stroke lead over Kenny Penny heading into Sunday.  A Goydos win at Sawgrass wouldn't be as random as Craig Perks in 2002, but it certainly would be unexpected.  Goydos has won twice on the PGA Tour, 11 years apart.  We'll see what he can do Sunday...
