Weaver finishes 6-over, reveals future plans

Virginia Tech rising junior Drew Weaver might not have made the cut at the British Open at 6-over-par, but he certainly accomplished a lot.  Weaver won the British Amateur in late June, the first American to do so since 1979, and has played not only in the British Open, but also will play in the 2008 Masters.  "It’s tough to come up a little short for the cut. I mean, I played my heart out today.  But it’s been an incredible week," said Weaver to Jim Huber during TNT's telecast.  Weaver added that he will most likely turn professional in two years, after he finishes school.

Weaver, first American since 1979 to win British Amateur

Drew Weaver won the British Amateur title on Saturday, becoming the first American to do so since 1979.  Weaver, a Virginia Tech junior, dedicated the win to his fellow classmates at Virginia Tech.  According to Tim Rosaforte on Golf Central Primetime, Weaver had heard the gun shots on April 16.  The 20-year-old now qualifies for this year's British Open at Carnoustie, where he will play with defending champion Tiger Woods.  He also qualifies for next year's Masters.
