Summerhays turns professional
After becoming the first amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour last week at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational, BYU senior Daniel Summerhays announced Wednesday that he will be turning professional. Kurt Kragthorpe of the Salt Lake Tribune writes, "It is too late for Daniel Summerhays to claim the $126,000 he would have earned for winning last weekend's golf tournament, but he will begin trying to make money next week on the Nationwide Tour. Summerhays' decision to turn professional...will enable him to play in a tournament close to home in September, while forcing him to miss a likely opportunity to play for the United States in the Walker Cup amateur matches in Ireland. He's also giving up his final year of eligibility at BYU..." Summerhays still plans to get his degree in finance from BYU and will try to make enough money in the last few months on the Nationwide Tour to get inside the top-25 and receive an automatic exemption next year to the PGA Tour.
