Nelson honored with national award
Although Byron Nelson wasn't alive to see it, his wife, Peggy Nelson, accepted the nation's highest civilain award on his behalf Tuesday at the Capitol. Nelson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, which has been given to George Washington, Mother Theresa, Thomas Edison, and many others. Todd J. Gillman of the Dallas Morning News writes, "Congress cited not just Nelson's golf prowess but his philanthropy. Through the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, he is credited with helping to raise more than $94 million for the Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers, which help needy children and families in the Dallas area." Nelson died in September, 2006.
