Bernhard Langer (59), Stephen Ames (64), and Jose Maria Olazabal (96) have withdrawn from The Barclays this week. Langer is still recovering from kidney surgery, while Rich Lerner said on Golf Central last night that Ames "simply chose not to play." Olazabal has been battling knee problems all year and his last top-25 finish was at The Players Championship in May (T-3).
Bernhard Langer (right) withdrew earlier today from the PGA Championship and will be replaced by Ted Purdy. Reuters reports that he pulled out due to an unspecified illness. Langer withdrew from the Deutsche Bank Players' Championship two weeks ago due to a kidney stone. Carl Petterson withdrew from the PGA Championship as well because his wife had their second child on Sunday, July 29. Petterson was replaced by Bo Van Pelt.
According to the Associated Press, "Bernhard Langer withdrew from the Deutsche Bank Players' Championship on Thursday after undergoing an operation to remove a kidney stone. The 49-year-old Langer woke up in considerable pain on Wednesday and was taken to a hospital in Hamburg for the operation, the PGA European Tour Web site said."
