If NBC knows what's good for the game of golf, Jimmy Roberts must do a better job with his post-round interviews. Yesterday was another example of poor etiquette, a lack of golf knowledge, and bad journalistic ethics.
The first interview I will address is the one with Sergio Garcia. Roberts asked Sergio about his poor putting FOUR times! Ask the question once, and move on. It's painful to listen to as an avid golf watcher. Even Garcia at the end of the interview began to chuckle when Roberts said that getting the ball in the hole is "I guess the object of the game."
The second interview was with Phil Mickelson, and I will begin with this classy opening from Roberts:
Almost a very good round today. You did something which is necessary out here, you birdied all four of the par-5's, but there were two episodes today I know you are going to look back on. Which was more damaging, the double on 14 or the bogey on 18? Which stays with you longer?
Thanks for reminding Phil of all that, Jimmy. I'm sure he appreciated it. Plus, have you not been watching all week? 18 has been playing close to a par-5 the first three days. Don't remind Phil that he "almost had a good round today." Roberts needs to sit down with a pen and paper and listen to a Steve Sands or David Feherty post-round interview. That, or give Bob Costas the mic.
