A female amateur golfer has sued a public golf club and it's making headlines. Marcia Chambers of the NYT writes that Elaine Joyce, an accomplished amateur player, is suing the Dennis Pines golf course in Cape Cod, for not letting her play in a men's-only event. Joyce was distraught and complained to town officials. But the town administrator did not budge, and Joyce filed a federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Boston against the town and golf officials.
Joyce has been dealing with problems like this for most of her life, and It has been an ongoing saga in golf, with many other women, like Joyce, filing complaints against their respective golf clubs. In the past few years, we have seen players like Suzy Whaley (pictured right), Annika Sorenstam, and Michelle Wie breaking boundaries and setting new standards. Hopefully, with time, the idea of women playing alongside men, will become a non-issue.
