Earlier today, Phil Mickelson shot a 1-under 70 and fought off a resilient Jeff Quinney to win the Northern Trust Open by two strokes at 12-under-par. This is the 33rd career tour win for Mickelson, and his first at Riviera Country Club. Mickelson told David Feherty of CBS Sports after his round:
I’ve wanted to win this tournament for a long time. Riviera is such a great golf course. And it was a tough fight today because Jeff (Quinney) played so well. He gave a couple back coming into the end, but he played very well throughout the day, and it was a good battle.
Mickelson now takes a huge lead in the FedEx Cup standings with three top-10 finishes so far this year, including a win and a second place finish. Lefty will play for the fifth week in a row at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship next week.
