I hadn't planned to write anything about Kelly Tilghman's comments on Friday at the Mercedes-Benz Championship when she said that today's young players should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley." After all, Tilghman apologized directly to the Woods camp and to viewers, and Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent, said that it is a "non-issue." Nevertheless, Tilghman's comment has caused quite a stir online (15th on Google trends) and a lot of people are talking about it. Below are two interesting perspectives from a blogger and golf writer:
Michael David Smith on AOL Fanhouse: "Apologizing and reaching out is better than nothing, but it's rather surprising that the apology took two days and that in the era of Don Imus, so little attention has been paid to this comment. It's hard to understand how a person who would use such a poor choice of words is in the broadcasting business."
Scott Hamilton of Golfweek: "Being familiar with Kelly Tilghman’s character and her chummy relationship with Tiger Woods – as well as Woods’ sense of humor – I’m more than willing to give her another chance. But you certainly have to file Tilghman’s on-air, on-camera comments during the Mercedes-Benz Championship under the “What was she thinking?” column."
